"Food, Glorious Food!"

I'm going to make a bold statement and say that something more frustrating than not getting what you want is not even knowing what you want.

The annoyance, pain, or sorrow of not getting what you want can be eased, soothed, and potentially adjusted to new wants and desires. You can learn to move on.

The worst part about not even knowing what you want is that you're stuck somewhere between contentment and craving. You know you aren't fully satisfied, but why aren't you? What is it that you want??

It's like that feeling when you know you're hungry-- in fact, you're STARVING, but you haven't a clue what for. So, you continue to be hungry, idling down row after row in Safeway hoping something jumps out at you.

THAT BEING SAID...

Might I also add the wonderful, amazing, totally unbelievably satisfying feeling of FINALLY knowing what you want.

It's very akin to a bag of Sun Chips (I like Sun Chips, so I'm using them in my illustration. You're welcome for the free advertising, Sun Chips.) falling off the shelf in front of you, and the second the bag hits the floor, you realize: "I WANT THOSE RIGHT NOW!!!"

This is followed by a hasty purchase of the product, and a pleasurable munching of a high carb snack food all the way home.

Or something like that.

"When You're the Best of Friends"

I just wanted to emphasize how important it is to maintain old friendships. It's like a breath of fresh air to converse with someone who you don't have to re-tell your whole life story to, and can help fill in the gaps of past events you've shared.

Keep your friends close.

Don't let them fade away like memories and old homework assignments.

"You've Got to Get Up, You've Got to Get Up, You've Got to Get Up This Morning."

Have you ever noticed that many experiences in life begin as those you really don't want to do at the time, but when it's over, you're always glad you did them?

It could be working out, or not eating that third Big Mac, waking up early in the morning, or working overtime to make some extra cash.

The thought that runs through your head right before beginning one of these tasks is usually a large, resounding *GROAN*

But I've come to realize it's these tasks, not the ones we look forward to, or enjoy, that we feel the most pride in. We also feel better after doing them.

They're like medicine. Humans by nature, don't seem to like things that are good for them. Laziness, irresponsibility, a love of fast food... those come naturally. It's when we discipline ourselves to accomplish the tasks requiring effort and drive that we get that feeling of satisfaction upon completion.

Funny how that works, isn't it?

"Oh They Say When You Marry In June..."

I love old adages like the one around which this song is built.

I also love the ones you'll find in nursery rhyme books, like this one:

Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

My parents tell stories of my little sister's unexpected birthdate Sunday morning... on the way to church.

Apparently that means she's hit the jackpot.

There were no stories indicating the day of the week I was born, so I googled a what-day-of-the-week-was-I-born generator (Google has everything) and learned I was born on a Thursday.

Dangit.

"...A Hundred Thousand Things to See"

I spent a good hour on Stumbleupon today. If you've never been there, please do. It's the best waste of time ever invented. Because I find it thoroughly entertaining, here are some of the things I found today:

"If I Were a Rich Man"

Such a good song.

I was recently speaking to some family friends about this song, and was informed that the original actor who played Tevye insisted on adding the third verse of the lyrics which go as follows:

If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.

And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men,
several hours every day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.

Apparently he felt it was important to emphasize this aspect as the most important desire of an impoverished Jewish man's longing for wealth. He felt it so strongly, I'm told, that he refused to sing the song unless it was included.

We often conjecture what we would do with a million dollars: pay off bills, go on an expensive vacation, buy a nicer car... but have you focused that desire for wealth down to it's most basic point? What do you truly desire to gain from more wealth? Once you know that, you might be surprised to find that what you seek is actually already attainable with what you already have.

(Unless you NEED to be the next Bill Gates... that may be more difficult.)
